History of Scientific Swimming Coaching in Payyanur.

The history of scientific coaching dates back to 1981, when NIS coach Mr Balachandran from Trivandrum coached people from various sports organisations in Payyanur in swimming. Rover Crew, which was one of the organsisations, took initiative to teach the scientific methods of swimming to the public of Payyanur.

First coaching was at 'Tayambath Kulam', in Thayineri, and it was inaugurated by Sri V M Damodharan, the organiser of rural sports center. Mr K V Jayaram led the coaching. Since then, for the last 35 years, KV Jayaram and his team has trained innumerable people of all ages in swimming.

In the year 2008, Kerala Adventure Sports Promoting Academy (KASPA) was formed in Payyanur. The first presient was Dr Mohan Ramdas. It has been instrumental in organising and conducting the swimming coaching since then. They have trained police personnel from KAP 4th Battalion, Mangattuparamba, fire and rescue staff and adventure cadets, in addition to the people from public, of all ages and both sexes.

The trainers under the KASPA are : Mr K V Jayaram (Physical education teaher) - Chief Technical director, Mr Suresh Kuttamath- director, Mr K V Prabhakaran (Asst Station officer, Fire and Rescue Station), Mr P Santhosh Kumar (film director), Mr VV Sivaraman (Yoga & swimming trainer), Mr VV Padmanabhan (fireman in Fire & Rescue Station & Retd. Indian Army Subedar). The following students also help the trainers - Abhiram, Sandeep, Balaram, Saurav.

Lions Club of Payyanur has been conducting swimming coaching with the help of KASPA since 6 years. It has honoured K V Jayaram, Suresh Kuttamath, and K V Prabhakaran, for their valuable contributions to the society.
